If one was, hypothetically speaking, given only one book, outside of scripture, to be read during Lent, I think it would be this one! I absolutely cannot recommend it enough. It changed my perspective on the cross, the Old Testament and “sleep” forever. You can get it on audible as well as paperback. One of the last books I ever gave my grandpa Ken last year, before his miraculous death, was Adam’s Deep Sleep and so you can also say that this book reminds me of him and his love for the Old Testament. If you read this book for Lent, I promise you won’t regret it. It’s forever going to be one of my top five must reads!

“Finding Jesus Christ present in the Old Testament — it seems on every page! Why in order to create Eve did God send a “deep sleep” on Adam? Why does Genesis tell us Noah was laid out naked and drunk? Why did God send a “deep sleep” upon Abraham, with dark dread in the midst of his sacrifice, when making a Covenant with him? Beginning with these deep sleeps experienced by Adam, Noah, and Abraham, this book finds more than a dozen instances of sleep featured in the Old Testament which each foreshadow the Passion of Jesus Christ. Adam’s Deep Sleep shows how characters from the OT – famous and not so famous – carried the cross, as each of us must. Their mysterious biblical ‘sleeps’ all point to the Passion of Christ. So do our lives — and if we sleep in Christ, we will wake with Him. We also find in the OT what it is that flows from His Sacred Heart in the Blood and water, namely: the Church, the Saints, the Sacraments, Wisdom and grace. And all these are the same, for they are God’s love.“
